CONNECTED HYBRID SMARTWATCH
The Hagen Connected Hybrid was developed as part of Skagen's first generation of connected wearables, bringing smart functionality into a product that still felt unmistakably like a traditional Skagen watch.
The challenge was to integrate new technology without allowing the technology to define the product. Rather than creating another screen-based smartwatch, the design focused on preserving the simplicity, proportion, and minimal Scandinavian aesthetic associated with the brand.
Working within the technical requirements of a connected platform introduced new constraints. Particular attention was given to minimizing visual complexity and maintaining a slim, lightweight appearance despite the additional internal technology.
The dial became an important part of the user experience. Traditional watch hands, a secondary indicator, and subtle visual cues were used to communicate activity progress and notifications without introducing a digital display.
Without a digital display, information had to be communicated differently.
The analog hands and secondary dial became part of the interface, providing visual feedback for activity progress and notifications while maintaining the appearance of a traditional timepiece. Physical pushers provided additional interaction without introducing a touchscreen or conventional smartwatch controls.
This created a connected experience that remained intentionally subtle—technology was present when needed and visually disappeared when it wasn't.
Hagen Connected launched as part of Skagen's first wearable technology collection and helped extend the brand's minimalist design language into the emerging connected-watch world.
The product received positive attention for achieving something central to the original design intent: delivering useful connected functionality while still looking and feeling like a traditional Skagen watch.
The platform continued to evolve into subsequent generations of Skagen Connected products, expanding the connected collection across additional case sizes, styles, and materials.
