SMARTWATCH PROJECT: FALSTER 1

Falster marked Skagen's transition from hybrid connected watches into a fully digital smartwatch. The challenge was to introduce a touchscreen experience while maintaining the minimal proportions, simplicity, function and wearability.

The development process focused heavily on proportion, weight, and perceived thickness. Working around the internal smartwatch components, the case was designed to use minimal material around the display and module, reducing visual mass while creating a lighter and more comfortable product on the wrist.

The simplified case construction, distinctive open wire lug, and single side button helped visually separate Falster from more technical-looking smartwatches while establishing a design language that remained recognizably Skagen.

Moving from an analog display to a full touchscreen introduced an entirely new design surface for the brand.

The digital watch faces and interface were developed with the same principles as the physical product: simplicity, clarity, and restraint. Information was reduced to essential elements, creating an experience that was easy to read while maintaining the minimal visual language of Skagen.

Dark backgrounds and simplified graphics were also used to take advantage of the OLED display and reduce unnecessary power consumption, connecting the visual design of the interface directly to the performance requirements of the product.

Falster launched at CES 2018 as Skagen's first touchscreen smartwatch and introduced a new connected product category for the brand.

The design received significant attention for its restrained approach to wearable technology, with reviewers consistently highlighting its minimalist appearance, slim profile, comfort, and ability to feel more like a traditional watch than a piece of technology.

Falster established the foundation for the next generation of Skagen touchscreen smartwatches and helped translate the brand's minimalist design philosophy into a fully digital wearable experience.
